The Truth About Fragrance Oils: Why We Use Only the Safest, IFRA-Compliant Ingredients

But over the years, our customers began asking for more variety—scents we simply couldn’t achieve with essential oils alone. Many fragrances, such as warm ambers, cozy vanillas, or complex fruit blends, don’t exist in essential-oil form. So, after careful research and even more careful ingredient sourcing, we made the decision to introduce fragrance oils into our line.

But not just any fragrance oils.

We use only fragrance oils that meet the strictest international safety standards, and we’ve never compromised on that.

What Makes Our Fragrance Oils Different

There’s a lot of confusion around the term “fragrance oil,” and understandably so. Not all fragrance oils on the market are created equal. Some contain harmful materials we would never allow in our products, including things like parabens, phthalates, and known endocrine disruptors.

Our approach is different: we use only fragrance oils that are carefully screened, rigorously tested, and fully compliant with the International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standards.

What Is IFRA?

IFRA is the global organization that regulates the safe use of fragrance materials. Their Standards are based on scientific evaluations performed by the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), an independent body of experts who assess fragrance ingredients for potential health risks.

If a fragrance doesn’t meet IFRA’s strict requirements, we don’t use it.

What IFRA Compliance Actually Means

IFRA evaluates fragrance ingredients for safety concerns including:

• Carcinogenicity

• Mutagenicity

• Reproductive toxicity

• Organ toxicity

• Skin sensitization

• Acute toxicity

This evaluation also helps ensure the fragrance materials we use do not include substances associated with endocrine disruption, phthalates of concern, or other ingredients that fall under IFRA restrictions.

Only fragrance materials that pass these assessments and meet IFRA’s allowable usage percentages are approved.

This is why we often encourage customers to familiarize themselves with IFRA if they’re unsure about fragrance safety. There are clean, safe fragrance oils out there—but they must come from reputable suppliers who follow IFRA’s science-backed standards.

Our Non-Negotiables for Fragrance Safety

From the beginning, we’ve upheld a strict internal policy on what we allow in our fragrances. The fragrance oils we use do not include:

• Carcinogens

• Mutagens

• Reproductive toxins

• Organ toxins

• Acute toxins

• Parabens

• Phthalates

• Endocrine disruptors

• Ingredients restricted by IFRA

• Ingredients flagged for major health concerns

We work only with suppliers who can provide detailed documentation showing their fragrance materials are:

• IFRA compliant

• RIFM evaluated

• Responsibly sourced

• Free from harmful or questionable components

This ensures our customers get beautiful, complex, long-lasting scents without compromising safety.

Why Not Just Use Essential Oils?

We love essential oils—always have, always will. They’re part of our company’s roots, and you’ll still find them in many of our products.

But essential oils alone:

• Don’t offer the scent variety customers want

• Can sometimes be more sensitizing depending on the oil

• Can’t create certain popular or cozy fragrances

• Don’t always remain stable in soap or bath products

Using safe fragrance oils allows us to provide high-quality, long-lasting, beautifully blended scents while still maintaining the integrity and purity our customers expect.
